FAQs
Does waxing and sugaring hurt?
In short, yes. But you can take actions before and after the treatment to lessen the immediate discomfort and lingering tenderness.
How to make a wax or sugar less painful?
The first step in making your experience as painless as possible is to time it right. Take into consideration the time of the month when booking your wax appointment. The pain of waxing can be exacerbated around or during your period due to increased inflammation and a shift in hormone levels that causes a heightened sensation threshold.
You also want to wait until the hair is about a quarter of an inch long. If the hair is too short, the wax will pull the hair but won’t be able to grip it enough to totally remove the hair. In other words, it’ll be more painful and less effective in terms of removal.
Secondly, you want to properly prep for your appointment by making sure your skin barrier is healthy. If you’re predisposed to folliculitis or ingrown hairs, gently exfoliate [nothing too aggressive] the night before to prevent irritation following the treatment.
Lastly, taking an Ibuprofen [200-400 milligrams] 30 minutes before waxing or sugaring your hair to decrease inflammation and help with the pain. We recommend that you consult with your medical doctor to see if that is the right approach for you.
What is sugaring?
Sugaring is a form of hair removal that resembles waxing but is gentler on the skin and is all-natural. The paste is made of only sugar, lemon juice and water. It dates back to the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece.
Sugaring tends to hurt less than waxing because it pulls less on the skin while still effectively removing the hair. This also means that you will have a lot less irritation and redness.
What is waxing?
Waxing is a tried-and-true method for getting rid of unwanted body hair. "Some benefits of waxing are super-smooth results—it effectively removes hair from the root. Waxing is also fast and efficient, meaning large areas can be waxed at once.
Should I wax or sugar?
Each technique depends on the skin sensitivity, body area, hair thickness, and length. For fine hair, we suggests sugaring, and for thicker hair, we recommend waxing.
Sugaring is also the most gentle and natural option for the skin. If any part of your body is particularly heat-sensitive, stick with sugaring, which is done at room temperature.
If you tend to break out or have adverse reactions to waxing, sugaring would also be a better option.
How long does my hair have to be to wax or sugar?
Your hair has to be at least 1/4-inch long, or around the size of a grain of rice, before you wax or sugar. This helps ensure that hair is completely removed from the root. If this is your first time waxing, try to grow out hair from your most previous hair removal for around 2-4 weeks.
